hi leigh, nice to meet you
i think as far as the mental health service goes the most i've been helped has been by some of the ward staff on the inpatient units (including nurses, students and healthcare support workers who really are the unsung heroes of the ward). other patients have been amazing too ... i guess they've all had the biggest impact on me as i've spent a long time in the inpatient units over the last 8 years and have been at my worst there. the most helpful has been people who have listened to me when i've been 'delusional' and not dismissed me out of hand. instead they've listened and then reasoned with me in a way that doesn't make me feel patronised. saying stuff like 'ok, so you don't want a bath because you don't want to get undressed cus the people watching the cameras will see you. well ... do you really care? are u gonna let them dictate what you do and don't do? what would happen if they did see you have a bath? .... etc etc etc. this healthcare support worker helped me get rightously angry at the people i thought were watching me, so much so that i had this bath. she sat the other side of the door whilst i bathed and talked to me to keep my mind of it. i hadn't undressed for a month or more and stunk badly ... nothing anyone else had said hade made the slightest bit of difference. similar things have happened when i've been afraid of taking my medication, of being poisoned and when my voices were being evil to me. i've been lucky to see the odd decent psychiatrist, a really good psychologist for a few weeks in sheffield, attend a hearing voices group faciliated by a few wonderful pychologists and have a great OT when i was on my first long term admission. have also had not so good ones of these, which is why i've chosen 'other'. unfortunately the standard of help i've received has been really variable, dependant soley on the personal qualities of the people i've worked with xxx Rai |

i think the peple who have helped me the most were the guys who made up the crisis resolution team.
for those of you who dont have one of these in your area, you get reffered to the CRT as a last attempt to keep you out of hospital. the CRT is made up of CPN's, social workers and support workers and they are amazing people. they can meet you at your home or you can go out with them to somewhere in he area you feel comfortable. some teams work 24 hours and you can call on them whenever you need them, i had got a phone call lasting around 30 mins most days aswell as a visit around every other day. The team look at all areas of your life and help you where thay can. they helped me with my housing problem and when i left their care (they only work with you for 6-8 weeks) they made sure i had the right kind of support so i now have regular contact with a social worker and a community support worker as well as the good ol' doc and psychologist. i realy dont think i could have got through things without the crisis team THANKS GUYS, YOU WERE ACE!!! |

i agree, the crisis team ive seen have helped quite a bit overall, especially certain members of the team. they've not been very helpful recently though, but they have been seeing me for 5 months now n ur only meant to see them for up to 8 weeks like u said, so maybe its cos of that.
other than that, the psych i have therapy with has been the most useful, cos although ive seen him since i was 16 so two years now, i feel like ive finally found someone who actually understands the problem areas etc n whats going on in my head. -x-

My current Psychologist has been the best thing for me so far. If I still had one of my old Psychiatrists then it would be her and my current Psychologist but I only have my Psychologist now. As my current Psychiatrist is a tw@t and wants to discharge me knowing I still need help.

Julie from Childline helped me most. She has been really understanding, and it makes me feel better talking to someone I can trust. I can't even talk to my bestest friend ever about it, because she doesn't know much about depression.
Love you all! ~~~Dana~~~ |

people who helped me most are my friends from psych ward, we knew each other better than any staff did, we are like family!!! apart from that, my old psychologist as he was fab really nice and took me seriously when said wanted to die. New psychologist great now too (got to know her now). Had a good psych nurse when in unit she was good but my actual therapist nurse was @#%$!!! most of the care assistants ok but only one would really listen to me. 2 good psychiatrists one thats just left and the temp one before him.
So sum good people, dont outwiegh the shitty ones but hey ho cant have everything lol |

I said psychologist, because she's been the most helpful in terms of figuring out why I am the way I am.
But I was tempted to put other, as it was actually another patient that really helped me out when I was IP. She had learning difficulties as well as mental health problems and she was very child like, it was interacting with her that helped me gain confidence and recover from my bad episode. |

Of the many many people who I have been directed to see over the years the most beneficial to me was the Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. Not saying that the bad feelings went away- sorry mad feelings sooo new to this site - just that the CBT gave me my power back - I could redirect my own thoughts instead of needing others who let's face it let you down anyway. This site is a new thing for me and from what I have seen so far I am hopeful regarding its helpfulness - cheers x

I had a brilliant social worker and support worker when I was in
supported housing. The social worker understood everything I told her and the support worker agreed to come with me to the hypnotist to stop my smoking (I got
most of my internal dialogue while I was smoking so I thought that if I could stop smoking then the internal dialogue would stop)
Our crisis team are totally useless. They leave seriously ill people at home alone and refuse to admit them. They're rude and arrogant and don't come round for about 12 hours after you've rung them, by which time you would have hurt yourself if you were going to. They only stay half an hour. Then they have the gall to say that their service works well. I know of people who killed themselves while under the supposed professional 'care' of the crisis team. It also isn't 24 hours. I also had an excellent nurse while in hospital. She let me choose her because I was unhappy about having a male nurse. She was brilliant. S he listened to me and helped me liaise with my psychiatrist who was being a bit of an ar*e at the time (although most of the time he's not too bad) |
